I RESEARCH USING DNA MATCHING
"We are more connected than we think"

Picture
Terence Valentine Alve - Genealogist and Family Researcher
I do my genealogical research with the aid of the MyHeritage genealogical programme. I have uploaded my DNA data into MyHeritage and have about 10,000 DNA matches to work with. These are the blood relatives who have uploaded their DNA to MyHeritage. Some of these matches link with common ancestors I know; many of these matches are yet to be linked to common ancestors.

In addition, I have uploaded both my sister Margaret's DNA for comparison purposes. And my wife Margaret's (nee Milne) DNA which has resulted in about 15,000 DNA matches, again with her common ancestors known and unknown.

I am presently in the process of uploading both my uncle's and my father's first cousin's DNA, to give me DNA results from a generation earlier, in order to extend my research.

I invite your assistance to enable me to link more DNA matches into our genealogical database.
Currently it contains 9,500+ people.

I work also with DNA data from these close relatives.

Six Generation Direct Ancestral Lines

The DNA data of those above assists me to extend our database and establish more common ancestral links.
Margaret's and my personal direct ancestral lines in MyHeritage appear below.

All who appear on these charts are deceased except for ourselves, Margaret & Terry.

I have found this YouTube video very helpful in training me to more effectively use DNA matching through MyHeritage.

My Heritage assists me to convert your DNA matches into data that helps me to refine and expand our genealogical database. When MyHeritage determines that your DNA matches my, or my relatives' above, DNA, I receive details of that match. Using various tools available from MyHeritage I am able often to determine where you fit. Without going into the detail of them, these tools include the following:

Regularly I come to a place where I think I have an idea about our common ancestor but a dialogue with you about the DNA data I am working with may clarify how we are related. Such dialogue will always be respectful that we are often dealing with living relatives who need privacy. I will always respect that.

How One Relative was Assisted

This is an exchange in the MyHeritage messaging system following an enquiry I received from a relative after they received DNA results, and how it progressed. Names and some details are edited to preserve privacy.

Hi, I have just received my dna results and looking through distant relatives you popped up as a possible parent's second cousin. I am adopted, and my birth father was also adopted, so I’m very interested in finding where I came from, my birth father does not know anything about his biological family. I wondered if you knew of anybody on your side who may have adopted out a son? Y.

Hi Y. I know that at least one of my 2nd cousins was adopted.
Our common ancestors are P.Q. & R.S. Before saying more for the moment, may I ask is N. your family or married name?
And, what was your father's name? Once I have this info I may be able to tell you more. Terry

Oh wow, .... I’m just really interested in finally finding out a bit more about where I come from etc, it’s all so interesting! Thanks so much for your reply! On here it said under your name that there was a 66.6% probability that you were a second cousin to one of my parents so I thought I might ask =)  Y.

Oh wow, so I currently live in P. My birth father’s name is A.B, the B. family adopted him as a baby and he never found out anything about his biological family so I had no info at all on his side. I’m just really interested in finally finding out a bit more about where I come from etc, It’s all so interesting! Thanks so much for your reply! On here it said under your name that there was a 66.6% probability that you were a second cousin to one of my parents so I thought I might ask =) Y.

Hi again ... So I am second cousin to your grandfather. That makes you a second cousin twice removed from me, by blood. As indicated our common ancestors are P.Q. & R.S. My family tree for this section of our family tree is here: https://www.alve.nz/... (webpage link incomplete) You may want to correct anything that is incorrect or missing. Regards, Terry

Oh wow that’s really cool! Thanks so much for your help... Y.

"We are more connected than we think"

Picture
No one is an island,
Entire of itself;
Every one is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.

If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less,
As well as if a promontory were:
As well as if a manor of thy friend's
Or of thine own were.

Any one's death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in humankind.
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.
John Donne (1623)
Written when he was severely ill, eight years before he died.
